For years, the reason Reddit mattered to developer marketers wasn't only the people in the thread. It was that Google, and lately AI assistants, read those threads and carried the honest recommendations forward. A helpful answer from 2024 showed up in a search result and an LLM answer in 2026. The honesty traveled. That pipe is now being metered and fenced, and most marketing teams haven't noticed.
Why the honest channel mattered
Reddit threads rank in Google, surface in AI answers, and stay in community memory for years. Developers trust them because the incentive structure rewards honesty: upvotes go to useful answers, self-promotion gets downvoted and removed, and the community moderates itself, so the signal stays high. Compare that to LinkedIn, where engagement bait thrives, or Twitter, where the algorithm rewards outrage.
For developer tools, "has anyone used X for Y?" threads became part of the buying process. If your product wasn't mentioned, or was mentioned badly, no amount of SEO or paid spend fixed it. The value was in the repetition. One honest thread kept paying you back, in search and in AI answers, long after you wrote it.
What changed: the doors are closing
Reddit worked out that its archive of honest human conversation is worth real money to the companies training and grounding AI models. So it started charging for it. Reddit's robots.txt now tells crawlers to stay out, and access runs through licensing deals. Google and OpenAI pay for it, and Anthropic has reportedly been cut off after a scraping dispute. Reddit's revenue is about 94% ads, with data licensing a small and growing line it would rather sell than give away.
This is a strategy shift, not a footnote in the trade press. The recommendations inside Reddit are as honest as ever. Whether they reach the model a developer is actually asking now depends on a contract you are not a party to. Your years of genuine participation might show up in ChatGPT and be invisible in Claude, or the reverse, and that can flip the next time a deal is signed or a lawsuit is filed.
Reddit is still worth your time, for the humans
None of this means abandon Reddit. The people are still there, and the genuine-participation playbook still works on them. It just works as community trust now, not as a guaranteed line into AI answers.
If you participate, do it the honest way, because it's the only way that survives contact with the community:
- Use a personal account with your real name or a consistent handle, and put who you work for in your bio.
- Answer questions in subreddits where you actually know the subject. Help far more than you mention your product. Roughly ten useful answers for every one that names what you sell is the balance that keeps you from reading as spam.
- Answer the hard, specific questions nobody else is touching. "How do I handle connection pooling with Postgres at scale?" answered in three real paragraphs gets upvoted and remembered.
- Don't post about your own product until the community already knows you. "Show Reddit" posts from strangers get scrutinized and removed.

Stop treating Reddit as your AI-visibility strategy
The change to make is this: keep participating on Reddit for the humans, but move your AI-visibility bet to content you control. The durable way to get cited by AI is owning the page, not renting a reputation on a platform that can fence you off from the models overnight. The smartest use of Reddit now is as a question source. Read the threads to find the exact questions developers ask, then answer them with specifics on a surface you own: your docs, your comparison pages, your knowledge base. Webflow did this directly. They scraped Reddit for the questions people kept asking, answered them as structured FAQs on their own pages, and those FAQs drove 57% of their new LLM citations. Reddit is still honest, and it's still worth showing up for. Just don't build your AI strategy on a channel whose owner is busy installing turnstiles. Be useful to the developers who are there, and put the content that has to reach the machines somewhere you'll always hold the keys.
