Ungated content

un-GAY-ted KON-tent

Content available without requiring contact information. Maximizes reach and trust at the cost of direct lead capture.

Ungated content is freely accessible. No form. No email required. No barriers. Anyone can read, watch, or download it.

The ungated philosophy says: if your content is good enough, it will build trust that converts to pipeline without forcing people through a form. People who are ready to buy will contact you. People who are not ready will come back when they are.

This approach works particularly well for developer audiences and for demand generation strategies. Developers hate forms. They will close a tab before filling out a form for a PDF. Ungating everything and measuring demand through direct conversions (demo requests, signups) instead of content downloads often produces better pipeline for developer-focused companies.

Examples

An ungated content strategy for developers.

All blog posts, tutorials, documentation, and technical guides are ungated. No forms anywhere except the demo request page. Monthly organic traffic: 80k. Demo requests: 200/month. The team cannot attribute specific demos to specific content, but pipeline grew 3x after the ungating shift.

Ungating increases SEO performance.

The company ungates 50 technical guides that were previously behind forms. Within 6 months, organic traffic doubles because Google can now index and rank the full content. The guides rank for hundreds of long-tail keywords.

Ungating frustrates the sales team.

After ungating, lead volume drops 60%. The sales team has fewer names to call. But demo request quality improves: prospects who request demos are further along in their evaluation. Close rates improve from 22% to 35%. Total pipeline stays flat despite fewer leads.

Frequently asked questions

How do you generate leads without gated content?

Rely on high-intent conversion points: demo requests, free trial signups, pricing page conversions, and contact forms. Use email newsletter subscriptions (voluntary, not gated) to build an audience. Measure pipeline from content, not leads from content.

Does ungating content hurt lead generation?

It reduces lead volume but often improves lead quality. Companies that ungate typically see fewer total leads but higher conversion rates from lead to opportunity. The net effect on pipeline is often neutral or positive because the leads that come in are higher intent.
