Terms of Service

Recto

Acceptance of terms

By downloading, installing, or using Recto, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the application.

License grant

Strategic Nerds grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use Recto on your Apple devices for personal or business purposes, under the App Store's terms for apps.

Description of service

Recto is a word processor for people writing books. It runs on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, keeps your books as folders of Markdown files on your devices, and syncs them through your own iCloud Drive. There is no Recto server and no Recto account.

Your writing

Everything you write in Recto is yours. Strategic Nerds claims no rights to it, never receives it, and has no way to read it.

User responsibilities

You are responsible for:

  • Keeping backups of your books. The library is a folder of files you can copy anywhere.
  • Your iCloud account and its terms, if you sync between devices
  • Ensuring your device meets the minimum system requirements
  • Maintaining the security of your device

Purchases

Recto is free. It contains one optional tip, which unlocks nothing. Tips are sold and refunded by Apple under the App Store's terms.

No warranty

Recto is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. We do not guarantee that the application will be error-free, secure, or continuously available.

We make no warranties regarding:

  • The preservation of your writing beyond the files on your devices
  • Uninterrupted syncing through iCloud, which is Apple's service
  • Compatibility with every future version of macOS or iOS

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Strategic Nerds is not liable for any damages arising from your use of Recto, including but not limited to:

  • Lost or corrupted writing
  • Syncing conflicts or delays
  • Any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages

Third-party services

Recto relies on Apple's iCloud Drive for syncing and on the App Store for tips. We are not responsible for their availability or their data handling practices. You must comply with Apple's terms when using them.

Open source

Recto is a rewrite of NEO, which Hugh Howey released under the MIT License. Recto's own source is published on GitHub under its own license, which governs the source and not your use of the application from the App Store.

Updates and modifications

We may update Recto from time to time to add features or fix bugs. We may also modify these terms. Continued use of the application after changes constitutes acceptance of the modified terms.

Termination

You may stop using Recto at any time by uninstalling the application. Your books stay in your iCloud Drive until you delete them.

We may discontinue the application or restrict your access if you violate these terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the United States. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of the United States.
