Recto
Your writing
Recto sends your writing nowhere.
Your books are folders of files on your own devices. If you keep them in iCloud Drive, they sync between your devices through your own iCloud account, under Apple's terms. There is no Recto server and no Recto account.
The analytics events Recto can send are a fixed list in the code, and none of them can carry text.
What is collected
Recto sends anonymous usage events to PostHog, an analytics service: which features get used, which export formats get chosen, and crashes. You can turn this off in Settings > Editor > Telemetry.
The events are not linked to your identity. Recto does not ask for your name or your email address, does not read your Apple Account, and does not use advertising identifiers.
These never leave your device:
- The text of anything you write
- Titles of books or chapters
- The book bible, notes, outlines, characters, darlings, and placeholders
- Anything you type into the search field
- File names and folder paths
- Word counts, for books or for days
The MCP server
Settings > Connections can start a server on your Mac that lets an AI tool on the same Mac read and edit the open book. It is off by default, listens on the Mac only, and stops when Recto quits. What the tool does with your text is governed by that tool's own policy.
Purchases
Recto is free. It contains one optional tip, which unlocks nothing and can be bought as often as you like.
Tips are processed by Apple through the App Store. Apple tells Recto whether a purchase completed. Recto never sees your payment details.
Children
Recto collects nothing that could identify anybody, of any age.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and the previous version stays in the app's public repository history.
