Link Opener

Overview

Link Opener is a macOS menu bar application that provides quick access to your frequently used links. This policy explains what data the app handles, where it lives, and what leaves your Mac.

Data on your Mac

Your links, groups, custom icons, themes, and app preferences are stored on your Mac in UserDefaults. We never see this data on Strategic Nerds servers.

iCloud sync

If you are signed in to iCloud and have iCloud Drive enabled, Link Opener mirrors your links and groups across your other Macs through Apple's iCloud Key-Value Store. The data travels over Apple's iCloud infrastructure and is governed by Apple's iCloud privacy policy. Strategic Nerds does not have access to it. You can turn iCloud sync off in macOS by signing out of iCloud or disabling iCloud Drive for Link Opener.

Network activity from the app

Link Opener makes a small number of outbound requests:

  • Update checks. The app uses Sparkle to fetch a release feed from coolasspuppy.com/link-opener-updates once a day and when you choose "Check for Updates…". The request includes your current app version and macOS version so we can publish appropriate updates.
  • Favicons. When you save a link, Link Opener requests the favicon from the site you saved (and only that site). Favicons are cached on your Mac.
  • Anonymous usage analytics. See the next section.

We do not run our own backend for storing your data — we only host the update feed and the disk image.

Anonymous usage analytics

Link Opener sends anonymous usage analytics through PostHog. This is opt-out: it is on by default and you can turn it off at any time from Settings → General. The app sends event-level pings such as "app launched", "link opened", or "update installed", along with a per-install random identifier that is not tied to your name, email, or Apple ID. We do not record link URLs, titles, group names, or any content you create.

Your control

You have complete control over your data:

  • Delete individual links or groups within the app
  • Export your links to JSON from Settings → Backup & Sync
  • Disable iCloud sync via macOS Settings
  • Disable analytics from Settings → General
  • Uninstall Link Opener to remove the local copy of your data on this Mac (other Macs sharing the same iCloud account will keep their copies)

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the application or our website.
