Menu Bar for Linear

Overview

Menu Bar for Linear is a macOS menu bar application that displays your Linear workspace. This policy explains what data the app handles, where it lives, and what leaves your Mac.

How Menu Bar for Linear works

The app connects directly to Linear's API using OAuth 2.0 credentials you authorize. It:

  • Authenticates with Linear using an OAuth 2.0 access token
  • Fetches your inbox notifications, issues, projects, initiatives, and team data from Linear
  • Displays this information in the menu bar popover
  • Stores fetched data on your Mac and never forwards it to Strategic Nerds servers

Data storage

All data retrieved from Linear is cached locally on your Mac for performance. This includes:

  • Notification data
  • Issue, project, and initiative details
  • Workspace and team information
  • Your Linear user profile

This cached data is stored only on your device. We have no access to it.

Credentials and authentication

Your Linear OAuth access and refresh tokens are stored securely in your Mac's Keychain. We never have access to these credentials. They are used solely to authenticate with Linear's servers on your behalf.

iCloud sync (optional)

If you enable iCloud sync in Settings, the app mirrors the following across your Macs using Apple's NSUbiquitousKeyValueStore:

  • The list of connected workspaces (name, slug, logo URL, display color)
  • App preferences (default tab, refresh interval, filter toggles)

OAuth tokens are never synced. Each device holds its own tokens in its own Keychain, so a workspace synced from another Mac starts in a "sign-in required" state until you authenticate on that machine. You can turn iCloud sync off at any time.

Third-party services

Menu Bar for Linear connects only to Linear (linear.app). You should review Linear's privacy policy at linear.app/privacy to understand how they handle your data.

Network activity from the app

Menu Bar for Linear makes outbound requests to:

  • Linear's API for your notifications, issues, projects, initiatives, and team data, as described above.
  • The Sparkle update feed at our update host once a day and when you choose "Check for Updates…". The request includes your current app version and macOS version so we can publish appropriate updates.
  • Optional usage analytics, described below.

We do not run our own backend for storing your Linear data — we only host the update feed and the disk image.

Anonymous usage analytics

Menu Bar for Linear sends anonymous usage analytics through PostHog. This is opt-out: it is on by default and you can turn it off at any time from the app's settings. The app sends event-level pings such as "app launched" or "update installed", along with a per-install random identifier that is not tied to your name, email, or Apple ID. We never record issue titles, project names, comments, notification contents, or any other Linear data.

Your control

You have complete control over your data:

  • Revoke access through Linear's security settings
  • Uninstall the app to remove all local application data
  • Delete tokens from your Mac's Keychain
  • Disable iCloud sync in Settings

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes through the application or our website.
